Create a calming and functional small dish from air dry clay to hold everyday items like earrings, keys, or loose change. This relaxing project allows you to engage your hands and mind while crafting something beautiful.

  • Total Time: 1200 minutes

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces of white air dry clay
  • 1 small sheet of 120 grit sandpaper
  • 1 small sheet of 220 grit sandpaper
  • 1 small bowl measuring about 4 inches across
  • 1 small rolling pin or smooth drinking glass, about 8 inches long
  • 1 craft knife with a 2-inch blade (optional)
  • 1 silicone craft mat or sheet of parchment paper, about 12 by 16 inches
  • 1 small cup containing 2 tablespoons of water
  • 1 soft paintbrush with a 1/2-inch-wide tip
  • 1 small bottle of acrylic craft paint, 2 fluid ounces
  • 1 small bottle of water-based matte sealer, 2 fluid ounces
  • 1 lint-free cloth, about 12 by 12 inches
  • 1 disposable table covering, at least 18 by 24 inches
  • 1 pair of disposable nitrile gloves (optional)
  • 1 small paper plate or palette for paint, about 6 inches across

Instructions

  1. Cover your table and set up your workspace with all materials within easy reach.
  2. Wash your hands to keep the clay clean.
  3. Condition the clay by kneading it for 2 to 3 minutes until flexible.
  4. Roll the clay into a smooth ball and flatten it into a disk about 1/4 inch thick and 4 1/2 inches across.
  5. Press the center of the disk down with your thumbs while supporting the outer edge with your fingers, leaving a rim of about 1/2 inch wide.
  6. Use the bowl as a guide to shape the outside edge.
  7. Trim any rough edges with the craft knife if needed, or opt to keep a softly irregular rim.
  8. Allow the dish to dry on the mat for 12 hours, then turn it over to dry for another 12 hours.
  9. Sand the dry surface lightly with 120 grit sandpaper, followed by 220 grit.
  10. Brush away dust with a lint-free cloth.
  11. Paint one thin coat of acrylic paint over the surfaces and let it dry for 30 to 45 minutes before applying a second coat.
  12. After the paint dries, apply one light coat of water-based matte sealer and let it dry for an hour.
  13. Allow the finished dish to rest for another 2 hours before using.

Notes

Use paint and sealer in a well-ventilated area and keep them away from food preparation surfaces. Always handle the craft knife safely.
