A soothing crochet project creating a small rectangular mat with a pumpkin-and-apple color story, perfect for use in various corners of the home.

  • Total Time: 180 minutes

Ingredients

  • Worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium), about 340 total yards (2 skeins of 170 yards each)
  • H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Optional: 2 stitch markers

Instructions

  1. Begin with the apple green yarn. Make a foundation chain of 44 chains.
  2. For Row 1, skip the first 2 chains from the hook. Work 1 double crochet into each remaining chain across (42 double crochet).
  3. Chain 2 to turn. Work 1 double crochet in each stitch across (keeping turning chain separate from the stitch count). Repeat for a total of 8 rows in apple green.
  4. Change to pumpkin orange at the end of Row 8. Work Rows 9 through 12 in pumpkin orange, maintaining the turning chain and 42 double crochet.
  5. Change back to apple green at the end of Row 12. Work Rows 13 through 16 in apple green, then change to pumpkin orange and work Rows 17 through 20. Continue alternating four-row color bands until you reach Row 32.
  6. Check the edges for any missing or extra stitches.
  7. For Row 32, finish the final color band and fasten off, leaving a tail of about 5 inches. Weave in each end through several stitches on the wrong side.
  8. Lay the finished rectangle flat to measure it (12 inches by 18 inches) and block if necessary.

Notes

This project is suitable for beginners, allowing a steady pace with manageable color changes. The yarn should ideally be a cotton-acrylic blend for absorbency and ease of use.
