This DIY project allows children to create beautiful suncatchers using pressed flowers and clear-drying glue. It provides a calming and creative way for kids to explore color and shape while practicing patience as the glue dries.

  • Total Time: 48 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 clear plastic lid or flat clear plastic sheet, about 5 inches across and at least 1/16 inch thick
  • 1/2 cup clear-drying school glue
  • 12 to 20 pressed or fully dried small flowers and leaves, each no larger than 2 inches wide
  • 1 small paintbrush, about 1/2 inch wide
  • 1 wooden toothpick
  • 1 piece of wax paper, at least 12 inches by 12 inches
  • 1 small paper cup, 3 fluid ounces or larger
  • 1 piece of cotton cord, 10 inches long
  • 1 small hole punch, 1/8 inch or similar (adult use recommended)
  • 1 pair of scissors (adult use or close supervision)
  • 1 ruler, at least 6 inches long (optional)
  • 1 set of washable craft gloves, 1 pair per child (optional)
  • 1 damp cloth, about 12 inches square
  • 1 table covering, such as a reusable vinyl tablecloth or a flattened paper grocery bag

Instructions

  1. Cover your table before you set out the glue to save it from sticky fingerprints.
  2. Place the wax paper flat and smooth, then set the clear plastic in the center.
  3. Pour the 1/2 cup of clear-drying school glue into the paper cup.
  4. Brush a thin base layer of glue over the plastic, leaving about 1/4 inch clear around the outer edge.
  5. Arrange the flowers while the glue is still wet, starting with the largest flowers, then tucking smaller leaves and petals into open spaces.
  6. Brush a second thin layer of glue over the flowers, beginning in the center and working toward the edge.
  7. Look closely for bubbles and use a toothpick to gently guide any large ones toward the edge.
  8. Set the piece somewhere level and out of reach of curious fingers to let it dry for 24 to 48 hours.
  9. Once dried, trim any long glue strings with scissors and punch a 1/8 inch hole near the top edge.
  10. Thread the 10 inch cotton cord through the hole and tie the ends together in a small double knot.
  11. Wipe the table and brush with the damp cloth while the glue remains washable.

Notes

This project allows for flexibility in flower arrangement and is suitable for children ages 4 and up with supervision. Ensure that children wash their hands after the activity.
