Create a cozy crochet lantern cover with a heart-shaped window that softly glows with a battery-operated tea light. This easy project offers a gentle rhythm perfect for family crafting.

  • Total Time: 180 minutes

Ingredients

  • 120 yards worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium), smooth acrylic
  • 1 H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • 1 clean glass jar (4 inches tall, 10 inches around)
  • 1 battery-operated tea light
  • 1 yarn needle
  • scissors
  • tape measure
  • 1 stitch marker (optional)
  • small length of contrasting worsted weight yarn for the heart window (optional)
  • narrow ribbon or short piece of twine for the jar rim (optional)

Instructions

  1. Chain 36, leaving the chain relaxed.
  2. Join the chain into a ring with a slip stitch, taking care not to twist it. Chain 2 for the turning chain, then work 1 hdc in each chain around. Join with a sl st to the first hdc. You will have 36 hdc.
  3. For round 2, chain 2 and work 1 hdc in each stitch around. Join with a sl st to the first hdc. You still have 36 hdc.
  4. Repeat round 2 for rounds 3 through 7, counting 36 hdc at the end of every round.
  5. For round 8, chain 2, then work 1 hdc in the next 12 stitches, 2 hdc in the next stitch for an increase, 1 hdc in the next 8 stitches, skip the next 2 stitches, and work 1 hdc in the remaining 12 stitches. Join with a sl st. You will have 35 hdc.
  6. For round 9, chain 2, work 1 hdc in the next 13 stitches, 2 hdc in the next stitch, 1 hdc in the next 6 stitches, skip the next 2 stitches, and work 1 hdc in the remaining 12 stitches. Join with a sl st. You will have 34 hdc.
  7. For round 10, chain 2, work 1 hdc in the next 14 stitches, 2 hdc in the next stitch, 1 hdc in the next 4 stitches, skip the next 2 stitches, and work 1 hdc in the remaining 12 stitches. Join with a sl st. You will have 33 hdc.
  8. For round 11, chain 2, work 1 hdc in the next 15 stitches, 2 hdc in the next stitch, 1 hdc in the next 2 stitches, skip the next 2 stitches, and work 1 hdc in the remaining 12 stitches. Join with a sl st. You will have 32 hdc.
  9. For round 12, chain 2, work 1 hdc in each stitch around, placing 1 hdc across each of the 2 skipped spaces from the previous round. Join with a sl st. You will have 32 hdc.
  10. For rounds 13 through 16, chain 2 and work 1 hdc in each stitch around. Join with a sl st after every round, keeping 32 hdc.
  11. Check the fit around the jar before finishing. Finish the last round with a sl st, cut the yarn, and pull the tail through the final loop.
  12. Use a yarn needle to weave in the ends.
  13. Slide the cover onto the clean, dry jar. Add the battery-operated tea light, then tie a short ribbon or piece of twine around the rim if desired.

Notes

This project uses US crochet terms. Keep the crochet cover and jar away from open flames and use a battery-operated light instead of a candle.
