Ingredients
- Baking soda
- Food coloring or liquid watercolors
- Vinegar
- Paintbrushes
- Paper
- Bowl for mixing
- Separate containers for colored paste
- Water
Instructions
- Make the baking soda paste. Put baking soda in a bowl and add a little water. Mix until it forms a paste that can be picked up with a paintbrush. Add water gradually so the paste stays thick enough to apply to paper.
- Divide and color the paste. Spoon the paste into separate containers. Add a different color of food coloring or liquid watercolors to each portion, then mix until the color is distributed.
- Paint the paper. Dip a paintbrush into the colored paste and apply it to the paper. Make shapes, patterns, pictures, or broad patches of color.
- Add the vinegar. When the painting is complete, lightly drizzle vinegar over the artwork and watch the baking soda react and bubble.
- Let the painting dry. Leave the artwork flat until it is completely dry. Avoid moving or stacking it while damp.
Notes
The paintings make personal keepsakes and should be handled gently. They can be displayed or framed once fully dry.
