Ingredients
- Baking soda (equal parts with water)
- Water (equal parts with baking soda)
- Food coloring (variety of colors)
- Paintbrushes (any quantity)
- Paper (sturdy recommended)
- Small bowls, cups, or containers (for separating colors)
- Newspaper or washable covering (to protect work surface)
- Apron or old shirt (to protect clothing)
Instructions
- Combine the baking soda and water in a bowl. Stir until they form a thick, smooth paste.
- Spoon the mixture into several small containers. Separate portions according to how many colors you want to make.
- Add a few drops of food coloring to each container. Mix each portion thoroughly until the color is evenly distributed.
- Place a piece of paper on your protected work surface. If the paper moves while you paint, secure the corners with removable tape.
- Dip a paintbrush into one of the colored mixtures and apply it to the paper. Create lines, shapes, dots, swirls, or larger painted areas.
- Try using more or less paste on the brush. Layer colors, make raised strokes, or combine different brush movements to see how the texture changes.
- Leave the finished painting undisturbed until it is completely dry. Thicker areas may require additional drying time.
- Once dry, place the painting in a frame, attach it to a display board, or use it as handmade artwork for a refrigerator or craft area.
Notes
Young children should be supervised because food coloring can stain, and an adult can help prepare the workspace.
