Baking soda is a versatile and inexpensive household staple that can deodorize, clean, and perform various everyday care tasks. This project outlines practical applications of baking soda for maintaining a fresh and clean home.

Ingredients

  • Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
  • Water, for making a cleaning paste
  • A soft cloth or non-scratch sponge
  • A small bowl or cup for mixing
  • A stable, open container for deodorizing
  • A clean, dry cloth for wiping and drying
  • Optional: gloves, especially if you have sensitive skin

Instructions

  1. For deodorizing, place a small amount of baking soda in an open, stable container near the source of the odor.
  2. For scrubbing, mix baking soda with just enough water to make a paste. Apply gently with a soft cloth or sponge, then rinse and dry.
  3. Freshen a refrigerator by pouring baking soda into a small, open container and placing it inside.
  4. Deodorize a rubbish bin by sprinkling a little baking soda into the clean, dry bottom of the bin before fitting a fresh liner.
  5. Reduce odors in footwear by placing a small amount of baking soda inside an old clean sock or pouch and leaving it in shoes.
  6. Freshen a sink or washable basin by sprinkling a small amount of baking soda onto a damp, non-scratch sponge, rubbing gently, and rinsing thoroughly.
  7. Clean a stained mug by making a loose paste with baking soda and water, rubbing gently with a sponge, and rinsing well.
  8. Remove light residue from a washable countertop by applying a small amount of baking soda paste with a soft cloth, wiping gently, rinsing, and drying.
  9. Freshen a lunch box by washing it first, then wiping it with a mild baking soda solution and rinsing completely.
  10. Clean the inside of a microwave using a mild solution of baking soda and water with a damp cloth, then wipe with clean water.

Notes

Always start with the mildest method and check care instructions for specific materials before use. Baking soda is not a disinfectant, so use appropriate cleaning products for sanitizing.
