Ingredients
- 1 skein, 7 ounces, of light worsted weight yarn, approximately 525 yards (soft acrylic, wool blend, or cotton blend)
- 1 crochet hook, US size H-8, 5 mm
- 1 yarn needle with a rounded tip, 2 inches long
- 1 pair of scissors with 3 inch blades
- 4 locking stitch markers, 1 inch each
- 1 measuring tape, 60 inches long
- 1 shallow basin or clean bowl, 2 quarts, for blocking
- 2 clean towels, each about 16 by 24 inches, for blocking
- 12 rust-resistant sewing pins, 1.5 inches long, optional for blocking
- 1 flat drying surface, at least 24 by 36 inches, such as a foam mat or dry towel
- 1 project bag or lidded storage box, about 12 by 16 inches
Instructions
- Cover the table before you begin, ideally with a cloth or towel.
- Read the yarn label and wind the skein loosely if it arrives in a tight hank.
- Make a slipknot large enough for the 5 mm hook to pass through comfortably.
- Make 4 chain stitches, then join the first chain to the last chain with a slip stitch to form a small ring.
- Work 3 chain stitches into that ring, which counts as your first double crochet.
- Work 2 double crochet stitches into the ring, then chain 2.
- Work 3 more double crochet stitches into the same ring.
- Turn your work. Chain 3, then place 2 double crochet stitches into the first space.
- Work 1 double crochet into each stitch across the short edge, then work 2 double crochet stitches into the chain-2 space at the end.
- Chain 2 to create the turning space. Work 3 double crochet stitches into that same space, then continue across the row with 1 double crochet in each stitch.
- At the far end, work 3 double crochet stitches into the last space.
- Repeat the row rhythm until the shawl measures about 48 inches along its longest curved edge and about 13 inches from the center point to the lower edge.
- For the optional simple border, chain 1 at the edge and work 1 single crochet into each stitch around the shawl.
- Join with a slip stitch and fasten off.
- Cut the yarn, leaving a 6 inch tail. Weave it back and forth through the wrong side of the fabric for about 2 inches, and trim the remaining end.
- Fill the basin with cool water and gently soak the shawl for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Press out the water between towels, lay the shawl flat, and ease the edges into a smooth curve. Let it dry completely before wearing or folding.
Notes
Keep scissors pointed away from your hand and closed when setting them down. Avoid pouring leftover blocking water into a sink if it contains dye, soap, or other craft materials.
