No reviews

A simple project that creates sparkling decorations using borax crystals, combining science and art.

  • Total Time: 1440 minutes

Ingredients

  • Borax: crystal-forming ingredient
  • Water: to make the borax solution
  • A jar: clean, heat-safe container
  • String: to grow crystals on its surface
  • A pencil or stick: to support the hanging string
  • Optional coloring: food coloring for tinting the crystals or markers for coloring the string

Instructions

  1. Prepare the hot water: Bring water to a boil. An adult should handle the boiling water and pour it carefully into the jar.
  2. Dissolve the borax: Add borax to the hot water and stir until it dissolves, ensuring no undissolved borax remains.
  3. Add color if desired: Stir in food coloring for tinted crystals or color the string with markers.
  4. Prepare the hanging string: Tie one end of the string to a pencil or stick and rest it across the top of the jar so the string hangs down into the solution.
  5. Check the string’s position: Ensure the string does not touch the sides or bottom of the jar.
  6. Leave the jar undisturbed: Place it in a safe location and let the solution sit overnight.
  7. Remove and display the crystal string: Lift the string out using the pencil or stick and display it as a decorative object.

Notes

Handle hot water and borax with care. Keep finished crystals away from damp areas and out of reach of children and pets.
