Ingredients
- Borax powder
- Water
- 1 heat-resistant container
- String or fishing line
- 1 stick or pencil
- Food coloring (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the solution. Bring water to a boil in a pot. Carefully add borax and stir until it has fully dissolved.
- Add color if you like. Stir in food coloring to tint the crystals. A few drops are a good place to start; you can add more for a stronger color.
- Set up the string. Tie one end of the string or fishing line to a stick or pencil. Rest the stick across the container so the string hangs into the solution without touching the bottom or sides.
- Let the crystals grow. Leave the container undisturbed overnight. Moving it can disrupt crystal growth.
- Remove and admire. Carefully lift out the string and look at your finished crystals. Let excess solution drip back into the container before handling the decoration.
Notes
The solution is hot during setup, and borax should not be eaten or handled carelessly. An adult should manage the boiling water, keep the activity away from young children and pets, and follow the borax package directions. Wash your hands after handling the materials.
