Ingredients
- 1 pound of white air-dry clay
- 1 small smooth oval form, about 3 inches long and 2 inches wide (such as a plastic egg or a rounded stone)
- 1 sheet of 120 grit sandpaper, cut into a 3 by 4 inch piece
- 1 sheet of 220 grit sandpaper, cut into a 3 by 4 inch piece
- 2 fluid ounces of light pink acrylic craft paint
- 1 fluid ounce of white acrylic craft paint
- 1 small paintbrush with a soft, flat tip, about 1/2 inch wide
- 1 small detail paintbrush, about 1/8 inch wide
- 1 cup of clean water for smoothing and rinsing the brushes
- 1 small mixing cup or jar lid, about 3 inches wide
- 1 plastic sculpting tool or wooden craft stick, about 5 inches long
- 1 clean kitchen knife or clay cutting tool (optional for trimming edges)
- 1 piece of plastic wrap, about 12 by 12 inches (for keeping unused clay soft)
- 1 drop cloth or paper grocery bag, opened flat to cover at least 24 by 18 inches of table
- 1 pair of disposable nitrile gloves (optional for painting)
- 1 small bottle of water-based matte sealer, about 2 fluid ounces
- 1 sheet of wax paper, about 12 by 12 inches (for the drying surface)
Instructions
- Set up your work area. Lay the drop cloth over the table and place the wax paper nearby for drying.
- Prepare the clay. Cut or pinch off about 12 ounces of the 1 pound block and wrap the remaining 4 ounces tightly in plastic wrap. Knead the working clay for 2 to 3 minutes until it feels flexible and smooth.
- Build the first shape. Press the clay around the smooth oval form, leaving a layer about 1/4 inch thick.
- Close the surface. Pinch the clay together along the seam, then roll the form gently between both palms to shape it.
- Refine the ends. Use the wooden tool to soften any deep creases and smooth the surface with a fingertip dipped in water.
- Create the gentle foam profile. Press one side slightly flatter and keep the opposite side rounded.
- Fix small mistakes without starting over. Smooth the largest marks and stop fussing when the basic shape feels balanced.
- Let the clay dry slowly. Set the form on the wax paper in a warm, dry room. Allow 24 to 48 hours of dry time before sanding.
- Sand the shape. Start with the 120 grit sandpaper and then move to the 220 grit sandpaper for a smooth finish.
- Remove the dust. Wipe the piece with a barely damp cloth and let it sit for 10 minutes.
- Mix the bubblegum color. Combine 2 fluid ounces of light pink paint and 1 fluid ounce of white paint in the mixing cup.
- Paint two thin coats. Apply a thin coat over the entire piece and let it dry for 30 to 45 minutes before adding a second coat.
- Add a small highlight after the pink paint dries using the detail brush for a faint white curve.
- Seal and finish. Apply one thin coat of water-based matte sealer and let it dry for at least 2 hours.
- Clean up carefully. Wash the brushes and tools before the paint dries.
