  • 1 sheet of 120 grit sandpaper, about 3 by 5 inches
  • 1 sheet of 220 grit sandpaper, about 3 by 5 inches
  • 1 small bottle of red acrylic craft paint, 2 fluid ounces
  • 1 small bottle of black acrylic craft paint, 2 fluid ounces
  • 1 small bottle of white acrylic craft paint, 2 fluid ounces (optional for eye details)
  • 1 small bottle of water-based clear acrylic sealer, 2 fluid ounces
  • 1 small flat paintbrush, about 1/2 inch wide
  • 1 small round detail brush, size 2 or similar
  • 1 small round detail brush, size 0 or similar
  • 1 pencil, 1
  • 1 ruler, 6 inches
  • 1 paper plate or paint palette, 1
  • 1 cup of water for rinsing brushes, 8 fluid ounces
  • 1 clean rag or paper towel, 1
  • 1 sheet of newspaper or 1 reusable drop cloth, large enough to cover the work area
  • 1 pair of disposable nitrile gloves, 1 pair
  • 1 roll of painter’s tape, 3/4 inch wide, optional

Instructions

  1. Cover the table before you do anything else with newspaper or a drop cloth.
  2. Wash the metal can or plastic container with warm water and dish soap, then dry it completely.
  3. Remove labels and check the rim for sharp edges.
  4. Put on nitrile gloves and lightly sand the outside with 120 grit sandpaper.
  5. Follow with 220 grit sandpaper to smooth the surface.
  6. Wipe away dust with a clean rag or slightly damp paper towel.
  7. Mark the front center of the container and two side points with a pencil and ruler.
  8. Stir the red acrylic paint and use the flat brush to apply a thin coat from the top edge downward.
  9. Set the container somewhere level and allow 2 to 4 hours of dry time.
  10. Once dry, apply a second thin layer of red paint.
  11. Lightly draw five or six lines for the web, connecting them with curved lines.
  12. Using the size 0 detail brush, trace the pencil lines with black paint.
  13. Paint a small black oval for the spider and add four short curved legs.
  14. Optionally, paint two narrow white eye shapes with the size 2 brush.
  15. Let the details dry, then use the flat brush to apply a thin coat of clear sealer.
  16. Let the sealer dry for 2 to 4 hours, followed by 24 hours of final cure time before use.

Notes

Keep acrylic paint and sealer away from eyes and mouths, and provide ventilation while working. Clean brushes with water and avoid soaking the painted holder.
