Ingredients
- 6 clear plastic fillable ornaments, 3 inches in diameter, with removable caps
- 8 fluid ounces of glow-in-the-dark acrylic paint, water-based
- 2 fluid ounces of white acrylic paint, water-based, for a softer base coat
- 1 small synthetic round paintbrush, size 8 or similar
- 1 small synthetic flat paintbrush, 1/2 inch wide
- 1 plastic mixing cup, 8 fluid ounces
- 1 wooden craft stick, 5 inches long, for stirring
- 6 paper cups, 3 inches tall, to hold the ornaments while they dry
- 24 inches of cotton cord, 1/8 inch thick, for hanging the bubbles
- 1 pair of scissors, 5 inches long
- 1 disposable table covering, about 24 inches by 36 inches
- 1 pair of reusable nitrile or household gloves, medium size
- 1 roll of painter's tape, 3/4 inch wide, optional for marking a clean band
- 1 sheet of parchment paper, 12 inches by 16 inches, for the drying area
- 1 clean water jar, 12 fluid ounces, for rinsing brushes
- 2 lint-free cloths, about 8 inches by 8 inches, for wiping drips
Instructions
- Cover your table before you open the paint to protect it from drips.
- Place the parchment paper beside the covered table, set the six paper cups in a row, and keep the clean cloths within reach.
- Put on the gloves and remove the caps from the six ornaments. Set each cap beside its matching ornament.
- Wash the plastic ornaments only if they feel dusty, then dry them completely.
- Stir the 2 fluid ounces of white acrylic paint slowly with the craft stick.
- Add a thin coat to the outside of each ornament using the flat brush, leaving the cap opening clear.
- Rest each painted ornament on a paper cup with the opening facing up.
- Let the white base coat dry for 45 to 60 minutes.
- Test the ornaments by touching the rim; if it feels cool but not tacky, add the glow paint.
- Stir the 8 fluid ounces of glow-in-the-dark acrylic paint gently.
- Paint a thin coat over each ornament, turning the bubble by its rim as you work.
- Allow the glow coat to dry for 60 to 90 minutes, then add a second thin glow coat.
- Look at the ornaments under a bright lamp, add more glow paint to any noticeably clear areas.
- Let the painted ornaments dry overnight, or for at least 4 to 6 hours if you need them the same day.
- Cut the 24 inches of cotton cord into six pieces, each 4 inches long.
- Thread one piece through each ornament cap and tie a small double knot.
- Replace the caps and arrange the six bubbles in a bowl or tie the cords to a short branch for hanging.
- Charge them beneath a bright lamp for 10 to 15 minutes, then move them to a dim room to enjoy their glow.
- Rinse the brushes in warm water, wipe the cup and table, and peel away the table covering.
Notes
Work in a ventilated room and keep all supplies away from food preparation areas. Supervise children closely while crafting.
