Ingredients
- Worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium), about 400 yards (366 meters) total, approximately 2 skeins (200 g each)
- I-9 crochet hook (5.5 mm)
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Scissors
- Stitch markers (optional)
- Tape measure
Instructions
- Foundation Chain: Start by making a magic ring to keep things tight at the center, or chain 52. Join the first and last chain with a slip stitch (sl st).
- Round 1: Chain 3 to make your first double crochet (dc). In the same ring, make 11 more dc to total 12. Slip stitch (sl st) into the top of the initial chain 3 to close the round.
- Round 2: Slip stitch into the first dc. Chain 3, which will count as your first dc. In the same stitch, make an increase of one more dc. Continue making 2 dc in each stitch around. You should have 24 dc in total at the end of the round.
- Round 3: Slip stitch into the first dc to close the round, then chain 3. Make 1 dc in the next stitch, and then an increase in the following stitch. Repeat from * to * until the end, totaling 36 dc.
- Round 4: Join with a sl st. Chain 3, then in the next stitch make 1 dc followed by an increase. Repeat around, which should give you 48 dc.
- Round 5: Close the round with a sl st and chain 3. This time, make 1 dc in the next 2 stitches and then an increase. Repeat this until the end of the round, leading to 60 dc.
- Main Body: Now, for the next several rounds, you’ll work 1 dc in every stitch without any increases. This creates a lovely, rhythmic texture that feels comforting in your hands. Continue for 8 more rounds.
- Final Rounds: To finish the last couple of rounds, consider creating a decorative edge. You may add a simple border with slip stitches to make a neat finish.
- Weave in Ends: Once you’ve completed your border, take a moment to weave in any loose ends with your yarn needle.
- Optional Blocking: If you’re working with wool, you can block your piece to open up the stitches beautifully. Just remember to avoid heat on acrylic yarn, using a cool blocking method is safe.
Notes
Consider substituting with any worsted weight yarn, noting the importance of matching fiber content to desired texture and structure. Use a yarn thickness that fits your style.
