Create a cozy and coordinated three-piece set consisting of a mug cozy, a matching coaster, and a narrow jar or vase wrap using basic crochet techniques.

  • Total Time: 720 minutes

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces of worsted-weight acrylic or wool-blend yarn in one color, approximately 350 yards total
  • 1 crochet hook, size H-8, 5.0 millimeters
  • 1 blunt yarn needle, 2 inches long
  • 1 pair of small scissors, 4 inches long
  • 4 locking stitch markers
  • 1 measuring tape, 60 inches long
  • 1 small ruler, 6 inches long
  • 1 clean towel, 16 by 24 inches
  • 1 spray bottle filled with 4 fluid ounces of water (optional)
  • 4 rust-resistant pins, 1.5 inches long (optional)
  • 1 shallow basket or tray, approximately 12 inches wide (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cover the table with a towel or clean cloth.
  2. Check your yarn and make a small gauge swatch: Chain 18 stitches and work 8 rows of half double crochet through the back loop only.
  3. Make the mug cozy foundation: Chain 34 stitches, join with a slip stitch.
  4. Work the ribbed rounds: Chain 1, then make one half double crochet through the back loop of each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch. Repeat for 10 rounds.
  5. Add the raised center panel: Mark the front center with two stitch markers, leaving 8 stitches between them. Alternate two front-post half double crochet stitches with two regular half double crochet stitches for 6 rounds.
  6. Shape the top edge: Work one final round of regular half double crochet through both loops.
  7. Make the matching coaster: Chain 18, then work 16 rows of half double crochet through the back loop only. Add a border of single crochet around all four sides.
  8. Make the jar or vase wrap: Chain 28 and join without twisting. Work 8 rounds of back-loop half double crochet, then add one round of front-post texture across the front half only.
  9. Pause and correct uneven work: Lay each piece flat and adjust if needed.
  10. Finish each piece: Cut the yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail, and weave the ends in.
  11. Block the set lightly: Mist with water, shape as needed, and let rest for 8 to 12 hours.
  12. Check the fit and finish: Test the cozy on a mug and the wrap on the jar.
  13. Clean up your work area.

Notes

Use a yarn that shows the raised stitches well, and ensure small crochet tools are kept away from young children.
