No reviews

This project involves crocheting a playful and decorative bat-shaped bra that can be worn as a Halloween accessory. It features two matching cups, a center bridge, and straps that resemble bat wings, making it a perfect costume piece.

  • Total Time: 360 minutes

Ingredients

  • Black worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium), acrylic, about 250 yards total; plan on 2 skeins of about 170 yards per 100 g skein
  • H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook; half a size up or down is fine depending on your tension
  • Yarn needle for weaving in the ends
  • Small sharp scissors
  • 4 stitch markers, optional but helpful for marking increases and wing points
  • Tape measure
  • One safety pin or removable marker for trying on the piece

Instructions

  1. Make a magic ring, wrapping the yarn around two fingers and inserting the hook to pull up a loop. Chain 2, then work 10 half double crochet into the ring. Join with a slip stitch to the first half double crochet and pull the yarn tail to close the center.
  2. For Round 2, chain 2. Work 2 half double crochet in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the first half double crochet.
  3. For Round 3, chain 2. Work 1 half double crochet in the first stitch, then 2 half double crochet in the next stitch, repeating around. Join with a slip stitch.
  4. For Round 4, chain 2. Work 1 half double crochet in each of the first 2 stitches, then 2 half double crochet in the next stitch. Repeat around and join with a slip stitch.
  5. For Round 5, chain 2. Work 1 half double crochet in each of the first 3 stitches, then 2 half double crochet in the next stitch. Repeat around and join with a slip stitch.
  6. For Round 6, chain 2. Work 1 half double crochet in each of the first 4 stitches, then 2 half double crochet in the next stitch. Repeat around and join with a slip stitch. Fasten off, leaving a 10-inch tail for sewing if attaching the cups by hand.
  7. Make the second cup in the same way as the first. Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each cup.
  8. Make the center bridge by joining yarn at the inner edge of one cup, chaining 8, and attaching to the inner edge of the other cup with a single crochet. Work 7 single crochet back across the chain, then slip stitch into the next stitch on the first cup. Fasten off and weave in ends.
  9. For each lower cup tie, join yarn at the bottom point of a cup. Chain 45 for a tie about 12 inches long, then fasten off. Repeat on the other cup.
  10. Make the upper straps by joining yarn at the outer top edge of each cup. Chain 32 for each strap and fasten off.
  11. Make the left wing by chaining 18; work 1 single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across. Turn, chain 1, and work 1 single crochet in each stitch across. Repeat this row once more.
  12. Shape the left wing with a row of points. Turn, chain 1, work 1 single crochet in the first 3 stitches, chain 3, skip 2 stitches, and work 1 single crochet in the next stitch. Repeat across.
  13. For the wing edging, work 1 single crochet, 1 half double crochet, 1 double crochet, and 1 treble crochet into each chain-3 space. Work 1 single crochet over each skipped section. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
  14. Make the right wing by repeating the same instructions, reversing the shaping when sewing it to the right cup so the points face outward.
  15. Check and weave in ends on the wrong side of the piece.

Notes

This project works best as a playful layer over a black camisole or fitted shirt, and it is designed as a costume accessory rather than a supportive bra. Small parts and long stitches are not suitable for children under three.
