Ingredients
- 1 ball of worsted-weight cotton yarn (2 ounces or less, in one color)
- 1 crochet hook (size H-8, 5.0 millimeters)
- 1 yarn needle with a large eye
- 1 pair of sharp fabric scissors
- 1 ruler (at least 12 inches long)
- 1 small bowl of lukewarm water (about 1 cup for optional blocking)
- 1 clean hand towel (12 inches by 24 inches or larger for shaping)
- 4 stainless steel pins (1 inch or longer for optional blocking)
- 1 piece of scrap cardboard (2 inches by 7 inches for measuring fringe)
- 1 clean work surface or washable table covering (about 18 inches by 24 inches)
Instructions
- Cover your table before you begin with a towel or washable cloth.
- Measure out a small starting tail of about 8 inches. Make a slipknot, then chain 10 stitches.
- Work one single crochet into the second chain from the hook. Continue with one single crochet in each remaining chain, giving you 9 stitches across the row. Turn your work gently.
- Chain 1 to turn, then work one single crochet in each stitch across. Count the stitches at the end of the row and keep returning to 9.
- Repeat the same row until the strip measures 6 inches long.
- Chain 1 and turn. Work single crochet evenly around the entire rectangle, placing 2 stitches in each corner.
- Join the border with a slip stitch into the first stitch. Cut the yarn, leaving an 8-inch tail.
- Weave the tail back and forth through the stitches on the wrong side. Repeat with the original starting tail.
- Make the fringe by wrapping yarn around the 7-inch cardboard strip 12 times. Cut across one end to create 12 pieces that each measure about 14 inches.
- Fold each piece in half to create six doubled strands. Attach the fringe to the short end of the bookmark.
- Trim the fringe to about 1 inch long, ensuring the strands look even.
- For optional blocking, dip the bookmark briefly in the bowl of lukewarm water, then press it between the towel layers and pin into a straight rectangle. Let it dry for 30 to 60 minutes.
- Remove the pins when the bookmark feels completely dry and check the woven ends.
Notes
Keep sharp scissors pointed away from your fingers. Supervise children around age 8 or younger when crafting.
