  • Total Time: 255 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 skein of worsted weight yarn, 4 ounces and about 200 yards, in the main color
  • 1 skein of worsted weight yarn, 4 ounces and about 80 yards, in the accent color
  • 1 crochet hook, size H-8, 5.0 mm
  • 1 blunt yarn needle, 3 inches to 4 inches long
  • 1 pair of yarn scissors, 4 inches to 5 inches long
  • 4 locking stitch markers, about 1 inch each
  • 1 flexible measuring tape, 60 inches long
  • 1 printed or handwritten stitch chart, 1 sheet of paper
  • 1 flat work surface, about 24 inches by 18 inches or larger
  • 1 clean cotton towel, about 24 inches by 16 inches, for a soft work mat
  • 1 small bowl, about 6 inches wide, for holding yarn or stitch markers

Instructions

  1. Cover the table with the cotton towel for a clean work surface.
  2. Check your yarn and gauge by making a small swatch with 16 stitches and 8 rows using the main color, aiming for 4 inches wide and 3 inches tall.
  3. Make a foundation chain of 96 stitches loosely with the main color and ensure it does not twist.
  4. Join the chain into a ring by slip stitching into the first chain and place a locking stitch marker through the first stitch.
  5. Work the first round by chaining 2, then double crocheting into each chain around and joining with a slip stitch.
  6. Begin the raised ribbing by chaining 2 and alternating one front post double crochet and one back post double crochet around the round, joining with a slip stitch.
  7. For rounds 3 through 5, repeat the alternating front post and back post pattern, joining each round with a slip stitch.
  8. Add the accent round by joining the accent color and repeating the front and back post sequence before returning to the main color after cutting the accent yarn.
  9. Continue alternating four main-color body rounds with one accent-color round until you have completed 28 rounds in total.
  10. Finish the top edge with a round of single crochet in the main color, join with a slip stitch, cut the yarn, and pull the tail through the final loop.
  11. Weave in all ends using the blunt yarn needle and gently shape the cowl.

Notes

Keep yarn scissors safe and supervise children around the crafting materials. Adjust sizing and height as desired by adding or removing foundation chains.
