Ingredients
- 1 skein of worsted-weight cotton yarn, 4 ounces, in a main color
- 1 skein of worsted-weight cotton yarn, 4 ounces, in a second bright color
- 1 skein of worsted-weight cotton yarn, 4 ounces, in a third bright color
- 1 crochet hook, size H-8, 5.0 millimeters
- 1 yarn needle with a blunt tip, about 2 inches long
- 1 pair of small scissors, 4 to 5 inches long
- 4 stitch markers, removable or locking
- 1 flexible measuring tape, 60 inches long
- 1 foam blocking mat or folded bath towel, about 24 inches square
- 12 rustproof pins, 1 to 2 inches long
- 1 clean spray bottle containing 8 fluid ounces of water, optional for blocking
- 1 lint-free cloth, about 12 by 12 inches
Instructions
- Cover your table with the folded towel before you begin.
- Make a slipknot with the main-color yarn and place it on the 5.0 millimeter hook. Chain 2, then work 6 single crochet stitches into the second chain from the hook.
- Place a stitch marker in the last stitch so you can see where each round ends.
- Work the crown increases in continuous rounds. In round 2, make 2 single crochet stitches in each stitch for 12 stitches total.
- In round 3, repeat 1 single crochet in the first stitch and 2 single crochet in the next stitch around for 18 stitches.
- Continue the crown pattern through round 8, adding 6 stitches evenly in each round.
- You should have 48 stitches at the end of round 8, and the crown should measure close to 6.5 inches across.
- Change to the second color at the end of round 8.
- Work rounds 9 through 18 with 48 single crochet stitches in each round.
- Change to the third color after round 14 for a six-round stripe, then return to the main color at the end of round 18.
- Begin the brim with the main color. In round 19, repeat 7 single crochet stitches and then 2 single crochet stitches in the next stitch around.
- In round 20, repeat 8 single crochet stitches and then 2 single crochet stitches in the next stitch around.
- In round 21, repeat 9 single crochet stitches and then 2 single crochet stitches in the next stitch around.
- Work rounds 22 through 25 with 66 single crochet stitches in each round.
- Finish the edge with a slip stitch in the next stitch, cut the yarn leaving a 6-inch tail, and pull the tail through the final loop.
- Thread the tail onto the yarn needle and weave it through the wrong side of several stitches, changing direction once so it stays secure.
- Weave in every remaining yarn tail, then place the hat on the towel.
- Lightly mist the hat with water if the fabric feels stiff, smooth the crown and brim with your hands, and pin the brim into an even curve.
- Let the hat rest for a few hours before wearing it so the fibers can settle.
Notes
Children can help sort colors or count stitches from about age 8 with supervision, while younger children should not handle the sharp scissors or yarn needle.
