Ingredients
- About 170 yards of worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium), preferably acrylic, for the main color.
- About 50 yards of worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium) in a contrasting color for the spikes.
- One H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook.
- One yarn needle with a blunt tip for sewing the spikes and weaving in the ends.
- Sharp scissors for trimming yarn tails.
- One stitch marker, optional, for marking the first stitch of each round.
- A tape measure for checking the neck opening and length as you work.
- A small amount of polyester fiberfill, optional, if you want the dinosaur spikes to stand slightly fuller before sewing them closed.
Instructions
- Make a foundation chain of 52.
- Join the chain into a ring with a slip stitch.
- Chain 2 for the turning chain, then work 1 half double crochet (hdc) in each chain around. Join with a slip stitch to the first hdc.
- For rounds 2 through 10, chain 2, then work 1 hdc in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch at the end of each round.
- After round 5, pause and check the fit around your dog's neck.
- Work rounds 11 and 12, switching to your contrast color at the end of round 10.
- For round 13, chain 1, then work 1 single crochet (sc) in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch.
- For round 14, work a gentle decrease in every sixth and seventh stitch around.
- Work round 15 with 1 sc in each stitch around, joining with a slip stitch at the end.
- Make five dinosaur spikes in the contrast color. For each spike, chain 9, work 1 sc in the second chain from the hook and in each remaining chain.
- Shape each spike by decreasing at both ends of the next 3 rows.
- Place the spikes along the back of the snood and sew them in place with the yarn needle.
- Weave in every end with the yarn needle, and block cold by laying the snood flat and shaping it gently with your hands.
Notes
This project is suitable for a confident beginner who can count stitches and join rounds. The finished snood is a fun accessory for short periods and should be used under supervision.
