  • Total Time: 1 hour

Ingredients

  • 1 ball of 100% cotton yarn, worsted weight, 2.5 ounces or about 120 yards
  • 1 crochet hook, US size H-8, 5.0 mm
  • 1 blunt yarn needle, 2 inches long
  • 1 pair of yarn scissors, 4 inches long
  • 4 locking stitch markers (optional)
  • 1 clean hand towel, about 16 inches by 24 inches
  • 1 small bowl, 2-quart capacity

Instructions

  1. Cover your table with a clean towel or a piece of scrap cardboard.
  2. Make a slip knot and place it on the crochet hook.
  3. Chain 30 stitches to make about 8 inches.
  4. Work the first row in single crochet, across the chain for 29 stitches.
  5. Chain 1 and turn the work.
  6. Work the next row in half double crochet through the back loop for 29 stitches.
  7. Chain 1 and turn, then work in single crochet through the back loop again for 29 stitches.
  8. Continue alternating rows of half double crochet and single crochet until you have 28 rows total.
  9. Finish with a single crochet row.
  10. Make the border: Chain 1 and single crochet evenly around all four sides, placing 3 single crochet stitches in each corner.
  11. Join the border with a slip stitch into the first single crochet.
  12. Cut the yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail, and pull it through the final loop.
  13. Weave in both yarn ends using the blunt yarn needle.
  14. Rinse the cloth in cool water, gently squeeze without twisting, and shape it into an 8-inch square on the clean towel.
  15. Let it air-dry for 1 to 2 hours before using.

Notes

Keep the crochet hook and scissors pointed away from your hand. Children can help from about age 8 with supervision. Keep loose craft materials away from children under 3 due to choking hazards.
