This Cowl Neck Crochet Dog Coat combines a soft neck warmer with a buttoned belly section to help keep a dog cozy on chilly walks. The construction features straightforward single crochet and separate coat components, making it a satisfying project for crocheters comfortable following garment instructions and checking fit.

Ingredients

  • Red Heart® Heat Waveâ„¢ yarn — 3.5 oz / 100 g; 198 yds / 181 m
  • Size U.S. G/6 (4 mm) crochet hook
  • Stitch markers
  • 4 buttons — 3/4" (2 cm) diameter
  • Yarn needle for sewing and weaving in ends (optional)
  • Scissors (optional)
  • Tape measure (optional)
  • Short lengths of spare yarn for temporary fitting checks (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the cowl. Chain 16, then work single crochet for the number of rows specified in the complete pattern. Keep your turning and edge instructions consistent with the pattern. Count stitches as you go so the cowl stays even and does not gain or lose stitches at its edges.
  2. Check the cowl fit. Before joining it to the body, compare it with the pattern’s sizing guidance and, if possible, carefully check it against your dog. It should sit comfortably without restricting the neck.
  3. Join the body section. Follow the complete pattern’s joining instructions to attach the cowl to the body. Use stitch markers to identify the placement points before joining.
  4. Shape the belly. Work the belly section according to the pattern’s stated increases, decreases, or other shaping directions.
  5. Add the edging and ribbing. Work the edging and ribbing where the pattern directs. Keep your tension consistent, especially along edges that will be visible or sit against the dog.
  6. Make the belly strap. Crochet the strap as directed in the complete pattern.
  7. Position and sew on the buttons. Use all four 3/4" (2 cm) buttons. Mark their positions before sewing so they are evenly placed and line up with the intended fastening points.
  8. Assemble and check the coat. Follow the complete pattern’s assembly directions for joining all components and finishing the edges.

Notes

For the best fit and comfort, plan to check the coat against the dog’s measurements rather than relying on breed or weight alone.
