Ingredients
- Worsted weight yarn, weight 4 medium, in a washable acrylic or acrylic blend, about 500 yards total, or three 170-yard skeins of about 100 g each
- H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle with a blunt tip
- Small sharp scissors
- Tape measure
- Four stitch markers, optional
- A small amount of contrasting scrap yarn
Instructions
- Measure the dog from the base of the neck to the start of the tail, then around the fullest part of the chest.
- Make a foundation chain of 42 chains.
- Row 1: Half double crochet (hdc) in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across. You will have 41 hdc.
- Chain 1 for the turning chain, then turn the work.
- Row 2: Work one hdc through the back loop only (BLO) in each stitch across. You will have 41 hdc.
- Repeat Row 2 until the body measures 12 inches from the foundation edge, which takes about 30 rows total.
- For the leg openings, work across the first 11 stitches in BLO, then chain 6. Skip the next 6 stitches and work in BLO across the remaining 24 stitches.
- For the next row, chain 1 and turn. Work one hdc in BLO across the first 11 stitches, work one hdc in each of the 6 chain stitches, then work one hdc in BLO across the final 24 stitches. You will again have 41 hdc.
- Work 3 more rows in BLO across all 41 stitches.
- Fold the sweater lengthwise with the textured sides facing each other. Sew the long back seam with a yarn needle and a mattress stitch, leaving the two lower openings unseamed for the front legs.
- For the collar, join yarn at the neckline with a slip stitch. Chain 1, then work one hdc around the neckline. Join with a slip stitch to the first hdc, then work 3 more rounds of hdc.
- For each leg cuff, join yarn around one leg opening with a slip stitch. Chain 1, work 12 hdc evenly around the opening and join with a slip stitch. Work 2 more rounds of hdc for 3 rounds total. Repeat for the second leg opening.
- Try the sweater on the dog, ensuring comfort and fit.
- Cut the yarn, leaving an 8-inch tail for each finishing point. Weave in the ends and trim once secure.
