Ingredients
- 200 yards (183 m) of worsted weight yarn (Lion Brand or Red Heart recommended)
- 1 H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- 1 yarn needle for weaving in ends
- 1 pair of scissors for cutting yarn
- stitch markers (optional)
- tape measure for checking dimensions
Instructions
- Make a magic ring (or magic circle) to begin your first round. Chain 3 (ch) to start but count this as your first double crochet (dc).
- Work 11 dc into the magic ring. Pull the tail to close the ring. You should have 12 dc total in your round.
- Join with a slip stitch (sl st) to the top of the first dc.
- Ch 3 to begin the next round. In the same stitch, work 1 dc for an increase. Work 1 dc in the next stitch, then increase again. Repeat this around for a total of 18 dc.
- Join with a sl st. Ch 3 to start the next round. In this round, increase every other stitch: (1 dc, 1 increase) around for a total of 24 dc.
- Continue increasing every third stitch for your next round: (1 dc in 2 stitches, 1 increase) for a total of 30 dc this round, and sl st join.
- For the next round, work even. Chain 3 to start, then stitch 1 dc in each dc around. This round helps establish the basket’s height.
- To create the sides of the basket, repeat even stitches for 7 more rounds, totaling 15 rounds so far.
- For the final round of the body, switch to back loop only (BLO) stitches for a subtle design technique. Single crochet (sc) around, ensuring your stitch count remains at 30 dc.
- To finish, cut the yarn and weave in the ends using a yarn needle, ensuring everything feels smooth and neat.
Notes
Creating a gauge swatch is recommended to ensure proper sizing. If using different yarn, ensure it maintains a similar feel to the suggested brands.
