A gentle, playful crochet project that results in a simple, wearable Halloween cat cape with pointed ears, suitable for kids to wear during Halloween or for pretend play.

  • Total Time: 300 minutes

Ingredients

  • Worsted weight yarn, weight 4 medium, about 440 yards (3 skeins of 147 yards each)
  • H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Sharp scissors
  • Tape measure
  • 1 stitch marker (optional)
  • Small amount of polyester fiberfill (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make a slip knot and chain 42.
  2. Turn and work one half double crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across for 41 hdc. Chain 1 and turn.
  3. For Row 2, work 1 hdc in each stitch across for 41 hdc.
  4. Place a stitch marker in the center stitch, the 21st stitch.
  5. For Row 3, hdc in the first 20 stitches, work 2 hdc in the next stitch, then hdc in the remaining 20 stitches for a total of 42 hdc.
  6. For Row 4, chain 1 and turn. Hdc across all 42 stitches.
  7. For Row 5, hdc in the first 20 stitches, work 2 hdc in the next stitch, then hdc in the remaining 21 stitches for a total of 43 hdc.
  8. Continue this pattern through Row 20, increasing by 1 on each odd-numbered row.
  9. For Row 40, you will have 60 hdc.
  10. For Row 41, hdc in the first 29 stitches, work 2 hdc in the next stitch, then hdc in the remaining 30 stitches for a total of 61 hdc.
  11. For Row 42, hdc across all 61 stitches. The cape now measures close to 20 inches from the neckline.
  12. Fasten off with a 6-inch tail and weave in the ends.
  13. For each ear, chain 9, then work 1 hdc in the second chain from the hook and 8 hdc across. Chain 1 and turn.
  14. Work 2 hdc together, then hdc across, continuing to decrease until 1 hdc remains. Fasten off with a 10-inch tail.
  15. Sew the ears onto the cape, placing them about 5 inches apart and optionally add fiberfill for shape.
  16. Make two neck ties by chaining 35 for each tie, and attach them to the upper corners of the cape.
  17. Weave in all remaining ends and block if necessary.

Notes

Check the right side of the fabric before completing the project, ensure there are no mistakes in the stitch count, and store the cape folded to prevent snagging.
