A playful seasonal sweater that feels handmade with skull and cone details, perfect for cool fall evenings.

  • Total Time: 740 minutes

Ingredients

  • Worsted weight yarn, weight 4 medium, acrylic, about 170 yards per 100 g skein: 6 skeins total, about 1,100 yards and 600 g altogether (black, orange, cream, green)
  • H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle for weaving in the ends
  • Scissors
  • Stitch markers, optional
  • Tape measure for checking gauge, panel width, and sweater length
  • Small notebook or scrap paper for recording row count, optional

Instructions

  1. Chain 142 for the back panel.
  2. Row 1: Work 1 double crochet (dc) in the fourth chain from the hook, work 1 dc in each chain across, then turn for a total of 140 dc.
  3. Row 2: Chain 3 for turning chain, work 1 dc in each stitch across, changing to orange for the final 20 stitches.
  4. Row 3: Chain 3 and turn, work 1 dc in each stitch across, carry the black yarn loosely along the back or cut it.
  5. Rows 4 through 10: Continue in double crochet following the color chart: black for 48 stitches, orange for 20 stitches, cream for 24 stitches, orange for 20 stitches, black for 28 stitches.
  6. Rows 11 through 20: Work in black across, making a skull face with cream yarn at the center of rows 14 through 18.
  7. Rows 21 through 30: Repeat the cone section from rows 4 through 10 but adjusting the orange section upward by one stitch on each side.
  8. Rows 31 through 48: Continue in black double crochet, counting at the end of every row.
  9. Shape the shoulder by fastening off after row 48. Make a second panel for the front, including skulls and cones.
  10. Join shoulder seams using a yarn needle and black yarn, leaving 92 stitches open for neckline.
  11. Join side seams from the lower edge upward, leaving a 9-inch opening on each side for armholes.
  12. For each cuff, attach black yarn at armhole, chain 18, work 1 single crochet (sc) across, and repeat for second sleeve.
  13. For the neckline, attach black yarn at the shoulder seam, working around the opening with single crochet to create a relaxed edge.
  14. Weave in every yarn tail with a yarn needle.
  15. Lay the sweater flat to dry and shape as needed.

Notes

The pattern uses US crochet terms. Make a gauge swatch to save time on adjustments. Adjust the size using multiples of 4 stitches for width.
