This project is a playful banana split costume pet project, a crochet dog coat that’s simple and fun to make. It features color changes to mimic sundae details and is suitable for beginners.

  • Total Time: 300 minutes

Ingredients

  • Worsted weight yarn (4 skeins total, 170 yards each) in chocolate brown, vanilla cream, strawberry pink, and banana yellow
  • H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Sharp scissors
  • Four stitch markers (optional)
  • Tape measure for checking fit
  • A small amount of polyester fiberfill (optional) for decoration

Instructions

  1. Chain 58 for the back panel.
  2. Work one double crochet in the fourth chain from the hook and continue with one double crochet in each chain across. Turn work.
  3. Chain 3, double crochet across the first row and turn.
  4. Repeat this row until you have 14 rows total, changing colors at the end of rows 4, 8, and 12.
  5. For the neck opening, work Row 15: chain 3, double crochet across the first 20 stitches, chain 17, skip the next 17 stitches, and double crochet in the final 20 stitches.
  6. For Row 16: chain 3, work one double crochet in each stitch across the first section, in the neck opening, and across the final section.
  7. Continue with double crochet for Rows 17 through 22.
  8. For Row 23 start belly shaping: chain 3, work double crochet in first 6 stitches, skip next 17 stitches, double crochet in remaining stitches.
  9. For Rows 24 through 27, keep 41 stitches in each row.
  10. For Row 28, chain 3 and double crochet across.
  11. Fold the coat with the right side facing, use stitch markers to hold the belly edges together and sew the marked section.
  12. Try the coat on your dog for a fit check and adjust as needed.
  13. Make optional cherry or whipped-cream detail and attach it.
  14. Weave in all ends and ensure the coat is securely finished.
  15. Block the coat if necessary.

Notes

This coat is best suited as a short supervised costume for occasions like photo sessions. Ensure that the coat does not restrict the dog's movement or comfort.
