These striped crochet arm warmers are a practical, colorful project for keeping your wrists and hands cozy while leaving your fingers free.

Ingredients

  • Yarn: RED HEART® Super Saver® Stripesâ„¢ (Derby Stripe), color 4151; 1 (1, 2, 2) skeins
  • Crochet hook: Susan Bates® 6 mm [US J-10]
  • Yarn needle: For sewing the seam and weaving in ends

Instructions

  1. Make the bottom ribbing: Chain 7 (8, 9, 10). Row 1: Single crochet (sc) in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across. You will have 6 (7, 8, 9) sc. Row 2: Chain 1, turn, then work a single crochet in the back loop only of each stitch across. Repeat Row 2 for Rows 3–18 (22, 24, 26). Do not fasten off after the last row.
  2. Work the arm section: Chain 1 and turn so you can work along one long side edge of the ribbing. Row 1: Single crochet in the side of each single crochet row. Row 2: Chain 3; this counts as the first double crochet (dc). Turn and work a dc in each stitch across. Row 3: Chain 3 and turn. Work a dc in the first dc, then a dc in each stitch across to the last dc. Work 2 dc in the last dc. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until you have 28 (30, 32, 36) stitches. Repeat Row 2 until the piece measures 13 (13½, 14, 15) in. End with a wrong-side row. Do not fasten off.
  3. Add the top ribbing: Row 1 (right side): Chain 7 (8, 9, 10). Single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across. Slip stitch in the first stitch of the arm section. Row 2: Slip stitch in the next stitch of the arm section. Chain 1 and turn. Skip the slip stitch you just made, then work a single crochet in the back loop only of each ribbing stitch across. Row 3: Chain 1 and turn. Work a single crochet in the back loop only of each ribbing stitch across, then slip stitch in the next stitch of the arm section. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 across the entire top of the arm section. End with a right-side row. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
  4. Sew and finish: Use the yarn needle and the long tail to sew the side seam. If you want a thumb opening, leave a 1 in. gap at the wrist. Weave in the remaining ends securely.

Notes

Customize your project by choosing a different stripe colorway for a new look, or use a solid yarn for a calmer finish. Check the fit as you work if substituting yarn.
