Ingredients
- Worsted weight yarn, weight 4 medium, in brown and orange, about 230 yards total from two 100 g skeins
- H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Sharp scissors
- One stitch marker (optional)
- Tape measure
Instructions
- Make a magic ring, also called a magic circle. Chain 2, then work 10 double crochet, or dc, into the ring. Pull the ring closed, slip stitch into the first double crochet, and place a stitch marker in the first stitch.
- For Round 2, chain 2 as the turning chain. Work 2 double crochet in each stitch around, then slip stitch into the first double crochet. You now have 20 stitches.
- For Round 3, chain 2. Work 1 double crochet in the first stitch, then 2 double crochet in the next stitch. Repeat around, slip stitch to the first double crochet, and move the marker. You have 30 stitches.
- For Round 4, chain 2. Work 1 double crochet in each of the first 2 stitches, then 2 double crochet in the next stitch. Repeat around and join with a slip stitch. You have 40 stitches.
- For Rounds 5 through 8, chain 2 and work 1 double crochet in every stitch around. Join each round with a slip stitch to the first double crochet. Each round has 40 stitches.
- Change to orange at the end of Round 8. Complete the final yarn over of the last brown double crochet with orange. Cut the brown yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail.
- For Round 9, chain 2 and work 1 double crochet in every stitch around with orange. Join with a slip stitch. You still have 40 stitches.
- For Round 10, chain 2. Work 1 front post double crochet, or FPdc, around the first stitch, then 1 back post double crochet, or BPdc, around the next stitch. Repeat this pair around and join with a slip stitch. You have 40 stitches.
- For Round 11, chain 2. Work an FPdc around the FPdc below and a BPdc around the BPdc below. Repeat around and join with a slip stitch. You still have 40 stitches.
- For Round 12, repeat Round 11. Join with a slip stitch, fasten off, and leave a 6-inch tail. Your finished hat should measure about 8 inches tall and 18 inches around the brim.
- Weave in the ends with a yarn needle, trimming the tails after they feel secure.
