Ingredients
- Eggshells: Clean, empty shells with an opening large enough to pour in the solution.
- Epsom salt: The salt used to make the filling solution.
- Water: Combine it with the Epsom salt and food coloring.
- Food coloring: Choose one shade or several colors for different shells.
- Glitter: Sprinkle it over the solution for extra sparkle.
- Mixing bowl: Use it to prepare the solution.
- Spoon: Stir the solution and help control the pour.
- Protective gloves: Wear them while handling the mixture and colored solution.
- Baking sheet: Set the filled eggshells on it while they dry.
Instructions
- Rinse and dry the eggshells. Carefully rinse each shell to remove residue. Handle it gently so it does not crack while wet. Let the shells dry before filling them.
- Mix the solution. Put Epsom salt, water, and food coloring into the mixing bowl. Stir with the spoon until they are combined into a colored solution.
- Fill each shell halfway. Pour the solution slowly into the eggshells. Stop when each is about half full.
- Add glitter. Sprinkle glitter over the top of the solution.
- Set the shells on a baking sheet. Place each filled shell carefully on the baking sheet.
- Let the shells dry for 24 hours. Leave the baking sheet undisturbed for a full day.
- Crack the shells gently. After the drying period, check that the contents are dry. Carefully crack each shell to reveal the geode-like formation inside.
- Display your creations. Arrange the finished geodes on a stable surface as decorations.
Notes
Keep the work area protected from drips, and supervise children throughout the activity. The finished geodes are decorations, not durable toys.
