Ingredients
- 6 clean white or brown eggshell halves, about 2 inches wide each
- 1/2 cup small decorative acrylic or glass craft crystals, in one or two colors
- 3 tablespoons white craft glue, such as a school glue or a product like Aleene's
- 1 tablespoon water for thinning the glue slightly, optional
- 1 small disposable paper cup, 3 to 4 inches wide
- 1 small soft paintbrush, about 1/4 inch wide
- 1 teaspoon fine white sand or pale craft sand, optional
- 1 sheet wax paper, about 12 by 18 inches
- 1 sheet cardboard, about 12 by 18 inches
- 1 pair disposable nitrile or household gloves, medium or large
- 1 small bowl, about 2 cups, for rinsing the shells
- 1 clean kitchen towel, about 16 by 24 inches
- 1 pair small craft scissors, optional
- 1 permanent marker, 1 writing size, optional
Instructions
- Cover the table before you begin. Lay down the cardboard, place the wax paper on top, and keep the glue, shells and crystals within easy reach.
- Rinse six eggshell halves in warm water and remove any loose inner membrane.
- Set the halves on the towel with the open sides facing up and let them dry completely.
- Place each shell inside a paper cup with the opening facing up.
- Put 3 tablespoons of white craft glue in the small bowl and stir in 1 tablespoon of water if needed.
- Paint a thin layer of glue over the inside of one shell, covering the bottom and the lower sidewalls, leaving the top 1/4 inch of the rim mostly clear.
- Hold the shell over the wax paper and sprinkle in a small pinch of crystals, turning the cup slowly so the pieces settle against the glue.
- Use the tip of the paintbrush to nudge crystals into bare spots, adding fine white sand if desired.
- Repeat the process for all six shells.
- Check for any crystals that sit on the outside and brush them away.
- Leave the shells in their cups, undisturbed, for 24 hours.
- After the drying time, gently tap each shell over the wax paper to check for loose crystals and secure with glue if needed.
- Clean up after the project.
Notes
Wear gloves if the shell edges feel sharp, and supervise children if they help sprinkle crystals.
