Ingredients
- 2 white or colored chenille pipe cleaners, each 12 inches long
- 1 16-fluid-ounce clear glass jar with a wide opening
- 2 cups very hot water, about 180 to 200 degrees Fahrenheit
- 6 tablespoons borax powder
- 1 wooden craft stick, 5 to 6 inches long
- 1 piece of cotton string, 10 inches long
- 1 pair of scissors
- 1 small pencil or bamboo skewer, 6 to 8 inches long
- 1 sheet of scrap paper or 1 small tray, about 12 by 16 inches
- 1 pair of household gloves
- 1 pair of safety glasses
- 1 small plate or saucer, 6 to 8 inches wide
Instructions
- Cover your table with the scrap paper or tray to catch drips.
- Twist the two 12-inch pipe cleaners together loosely and bend them into a simple star, spiral, snowflake, or branching shape.
- Cut the cotton string to 10 inches and tie one end around the center or upper branch of the pipe-cleaner shape.
- Rest the pencil across the jar opening and lower the shape inside without letting it touch the glass or bottom.
- Heat 2 cups of water until it reaches about 180 to 200 degrees Fahrenheit and pour it carefully into the glass jar.
- Add 6 tablespoons of borax powder, one tablespoon at a time, and stir slowly with the wooden craft stick until the powder disappears.
- Place the pencil across the jar and let the pipe-cleaner shape hang in the solution.
- Set the jar somewhere undisturbed for 8 to 12 hours to let the crystals grow.
- Wear gloves, lift the pencil and let the piece drip over the jar for a minute before placing it on the small plate or saucer.
- Let the crystal shape air-dry for 30 to 60 minutes before moving it to its final display spot.
- Clean the work area with a damp cloth and wash the jar and spoon separately from food tools.
Notes
Keep the jar away from pets and young children, and label it while it sits. Handle the finished piece gently to avoid damage.
