A calming DIY project that involves stirring, kneading, and shaping a simple dough from cornstarch and dish soap, perfect for both children and adults to enjoy.

  • Total Time: 60 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup clear or lightly colored dish soap
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon liquid watercolor or food coloring (optional)
  • 1 medium mixing bowl (about 2 quarts)
  • 1 silicone spatula or wooden spoon
  • 1 tablespoon measuring spoon
  • 1 sheet parchment paper (12 by 16 inches)
  • 1 pair disposable gloves (optional)
  • 1 small airtight container with a lid
  • 1 cooling rack or flat tray
  • 1 clean cotton cloth

Instructions

  1. Cover your work surface with parchment paper or a washable tablecloth.
  2. Measure the cornstarch and pour 1 cup into the mixing bowl.
  3. Tap the bowl gently on the table to level the powder and break up any compacted areas.
  4. Add 1/4 cup of dish soap slowly and stir with the spatula.
  5. Add the remaining 1/4 cup of dish soap one tablespoon at a time, scraping the sides of the bowl as the mixture begins to clump.
  6. Stir in the optional vegetable oil until the mixture looks evenly moistened.
  7. Check the texture by pressing a little mixture between your fingers to see if it holds together briefly.
  8. If it feels wet and shiny, sprinkle in cornstarch 1 teaspoon at a time, up to a maximum additional of 2 tablespoons.
  9. Turn the mixture onto the parchment and knead it for 3 to 5 minutes until the surface feels soft.
  10. If desired, divide the dough into portions and add food coloring to each, kneading until color is even.
  11. Shape the dough into small pieces, keeping them about 1/4 inch thick for even drying.
  12. Place each shape on the cooling rack or tray with space around them.
  13. After 12 hours, turn the pieces if the underside still feels cool or soft, and continue drying for another 12 to 36 hours.
  14. Clean the work area by scraping loose dough into the trash and wiping the table.

Notes

Remember that the dough should not be tasted and should be kept away from eyes and broken skin. Wash hands after making it, especially when adding food coloring.
