Create your own beautiful soy candles as home décor or thoughtful gifts using simple materials and techniques. This beginner-friendly project allows for customization with various scents and colors.

Ingredients

  • Glass jars
  • 32–34 ounces of soy candle wax
  • Candle scents, such as essential oils or fragrance oils
  • 100% cotton wicks
  • Wick holders
  • Extra-large glass measuring cup
  • Scale
  • Kitchen thermometer
  • Parchment paper or old newspapers

Instructions

  1. Protect your work surface by covering it with parchment paper or old newspapers.
  2. Prepare the jars by ensuring each one is clean and completely dry, and secure one cotton wick to the center of the bottom of each jar using a wick sticker.
  3. Stabilize the wicks by placing a wick holder across the top of each jar.
  4. Measure the wax by weighing out 32–34 ounces of soy wax using a scale.
  5. Melt the wax in the extra-large glass measuring cup in the microwave in 1-minute intervals, stirring carefully after each interval until fully melted.
  6. Check the temperature of the melted wax with a kitchen thermometer.
  7. Add fragrance oil at a rate of 1 tablespoon for every 8 ounces of wax and stir slowly and thoroughly.
  8. If desired, add candle-safe color dye according to the dye manufacturer’s directions.
  9. Cool the melted wax to 135°F before pouring it carefully into the prepared jars, ensuring the wicks remain centered.
  10. Let the filled jars set in a dry, undisturbed area until the wax is fully cooled.
  11. Trim the wicks to a suitable length once the candles have cooled and place the lids on the jars.
  12. Allow the candles to cure for at least 48 hours before burning them.

Notes

Always use caution around hot wax. Never leave melting wax or a burning candle unattended and follow safety recommendations for your specific materials.
