This gentle beginner project allows you to create a translucent flower suncatcher using clear-drying school glue, pressed flowers, and a hanging loop. Ideal for brightening up any space with soft, glassy layers of glue and beautiful florals.

  • Total Time: 48 minutes

Ingredients

  • 8 fluid ounces of clear-drying school glue
  • 1 sheet of clear plastic from a report cover, food container lid, or craft acetate, cut to 4 inches by 6 inches
  • 1 piece of clear plastic or cardstock for the outer template, cut to 5 inches by 7 inches
  • 8 to 12 small pressed flowers and flat leaves, each no larger than 2 inches
  • 1 disposable foam brush, 1 inch wide
  • 1 wooden craft stick, 4 1/2 inches long
  • 1 pair of small tweezers (optional)
  • 12 inches of clear nylon cord, 1/16 inch thick
  • 2 small pieces of painter’s tape, each about 3 inches long
  • 1 sheet of wax paper, at least 12 inches by 12 inches
  • 1 small disposable cup, 3 fluid ounces
  • 1 pair of nitrile or household gloves (optional)
  • 1 pair of scissors
  • 1 ruler, 12 inches long
  • 1 pencil
  • 1 sheet of 220 grit sandpaper (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cover the table with wax paper to protect the surface.
  2. Measure and mark a 5-inch by 7-inch rectangle on the plastic or cardstock template. Cut it out and place the 4-inch by 6-inch clear plastic sheet in the center.
  3. Check the plastic edges for rough spots and smooth with sandpaper if necessary.
  4. Tape the clear sheet in place on the template using painter's tape, securing the top and bottom edges.
  5. Pour 2 fluid ounces of clear-drying glue into the disposable cup and spread it evenly with the foam brush on the clear plastic, stopping just inside the taped edges.
  6. Wait about 10 minutes for the glue layer to settle and check for large bubbles, guiding them toward an edge with the craft stick.
  7. Arrange the pressed flowers and leaves on top of the glue, leaving some space between them.
  8. If a flower is crowded, carefully lift it with tweezers and reposition before the glue skins over.
  9. Pour the remaining 6 fluid ounces of glue over the flowers, using the clean side of the foam brush to cover everything completely.
  10. Wait 5 minutes and touch only the largest bubbles with the craft stick.
  11. Allow the front to dry flat for at least 24 hours, avoiding direct heat and dust.
  12. Once dry, cut 12 inches of clear nylon cord, tie it into a loop, and attach it to the top center of the piece with glue.
  13. Let the hanging loop patch dry for 12 to 24 hours before removing painter's tape and trimming any excess glue strings.

Notes

Clear school glue does not require heat or open flame. Use scissors carefully, and supervise children if they assist in arranging flowers. Keep excess glue out of drains.
