Ingredients
- 1 clear plastic or glass jar, 16 fluid ounces, with a lid
- 10 fluid ounces vegetable oil
- 4 fluid ounces room-temperature water
- 6 to 8 drops liquid food coloring, one color or a blend
- 1 effervescent antacid tablet, broken into 4 pieces
- 1 color-changing battery-powered LED tea light, 2-inch diameter or smaller
- 1 small funnel, 1-inch opening or wider (optional, but helpful)
- 1 measuring cup, 12-fluid-ounce capacity or larger
- 1 tablespoon measure
- 1 wooden skewer, 6 inches long (optional for guiding drops)
- 1 clean cloth or paper towel, 12 inches by 12 inches
- 1 protective table covering, at least 24 inches by 36 inches
- 1 pair disposable gloves, adult size (optional for keeping food coloring off your hands)
- 1 small tray, at least 8 inches by 10 inches (recommended for displaying the jar)
Instructions
- Cover the table with a protective surface before you measure anything.
- Wash the jar, lid, measuring cup, and funnel with warm soapy water. Rinse them well, then dry the inside completely with a clean cloth.
- Set the jar on the tray and place the LED tea light beside it.
- Pour 10 fluid ounces of vegetable oil into the jar. Use the funnel if needed.
- Measure 4 fluid ounces of room-temperature water in the measuring cup. Add 6 to 8 drops of liquid food coloring and stir gently.
- Pour the colored water into the jar along the side of the glass in a thin stream.
- Leave at least 1 inch of empty space at the top of the jar.
- Break the effervescent tablet into 4 pieces. Drop one piece into the jar.
- Place the lid on loosely while the first piece fizzes.
- Adjust the liquid look if needed by adding 1 or 2 drops of food coloring after opening the jar carefully.
- Place the jar on top of the color-changing LED tea light and turn it on.
- Wait 5 to 10 minutes for the liquid to settle before adding another tablet piece.
Notes
Use only a battery-powered LED tea light and avoid shaking the jar to prevent leaks.
