Ingredients
- Worsted weight (weight 4, medium) cotton yarn, about 420 yards total, or 3 skeins of about 140 yards per 70 g skein.
- H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle with a large eye for weaving in the ends
- Scissors
- Tape measure
- Stitch markers, optional
Instructions
- Make a foundation chain of 44 stitches.
- Row 1: Yarn over, insert your hook into the third chain from the hook, yarn over and pull up a loop, then yarn over and pull through two loops twice. Work 1 double crochet in each chain across. You will have 42 double crochet stitches. Chain 2 to turn.
- Row 2: Turn your work. The chain 2 counts as the first double crochet in this pattern. Work 1 double crochet in the next stitch, then continue alternating 1 double crochet in each stitch across. You will have 42 double crochet stitches.
- Rows 3 through 8: Repeat Row 2.
- Rows 9 through 16: Continue the same pattern.
- Rows 17 through 24: Work 1 double crochet in each stitch across, chain 2, and turn.
- Rows 25 through 32: Repeat the same row.
- Rows 33 through 36: Work the final four rows in double crochet.
- Finish the final row by cutting the yarn, leaving a tail about 8 inches long. Pull the tail through the last loop to secure it.
- Use a yarn needle to weave in the ends, moving the needle back and forth through several stitches on the wrong side.
- Wash the mat before use according to the cotton care instructions.
Notes
The finished size is approximately 12 inches by 18 inches (30 cm by 46 cm). Make sure to block the mat to help it retain shape.
