Ingredients
- 4 clear fillable plastic ornaments, 3.15 inches wide, with removable caps
- 2 fluid ounces dark blue acrylic craft paint
- 1 fluid ounce violet acrylic craft paint
- 1 fluid ounce silver acrylic craft paint
- 1 tablespoon fine silver glitter
- 1 tablespoon fine iridescent glitter
- 4 feet narrow satin ribbon, 1/4 inch wide
- 4 small disposable cups, 8 ounces each, for drying the ornaments
- 4 wooden craft sticks, 4.5 inches long, for guiding paint
- 1 roll painter's tape, 3/4 inch wide
- 1 plastic table covering, at least 24 by 36 inches
- 1 package disposable nitrile gloves, at least 4 gloves
- 4 lint-free cloths, 8 by 8 inches, for wiping the outside
- 1 sheet white cardstock, 8.5 by 11 inches, for checking color
- 1 small funnel, 2 inches wide, optional but helpful
- 1 bottle clear water-based craft sealer, 2 fluid ounces, optional
Instructions
- Cover your table before you open the paint.
- Put on nitrile gloves and arrange the four ornaments, paint, glitter, cups, cloths, and craft sticks within reach.
- Remove each ornament cap and place it upside down on a clean cloth.
- Use a small piece of painter’s tape to mark the outside of each ornament with a simple number from one through four.
- Add about 1/2 fluid ounce of dark blue acrylic paint to the first ornament through the opening.
- Add about 1/4 fluid ounce of violet paint beside the blue.
- Slowly turn the ornament in your hands so the paint travels along the inside.
- Add about 1/4 fluid ounce of silver paint in two or three small spots.
- Sprinkle 1/2 tablespoon of silver glitter and 1/2 tablespoon of iridescent glitter into the opening.
- Cover the opening loosely with a gloved finger, then roll the ornament between your palms.
- Set the ornament opening downward over one disposable cup.
- Repeat the paint, color, and glitter pattern for the other three ornaments.
- Leave the ornaments upside down in the cups for 12 hours.
- Then turn them upright and let them dry for another 12 hours.
- Replace the caps.
- Cut four 12-inch lengths of ribbon, thread one through each cap, and tie a small loop.
- If you want a more protected finish, wipe only the outside of each ornament with a small amount of the optional water-based sealer.
- Let the outside finish dry for 2 hours before hanging.
Notes
Keep glitter and paint away from children under 3. Work over a covered table and avoid breathing loose glitter.
