Ingredients
- 1 clear plastic or glass jar with a screw lid, 16 fluid ounces, wide mouth preferred
- 1 cup clear school glue, washable and non-toxic
- 1 cup warm water, not boiling
- 1 tablespoon blue liquid watercolor or washable liquid food coloring
- 1 tablespoon purple liquid watercolor or washable liquid food coloring
- 1 tablespoon fine silver glitter
- 1 tablespoon fine blue glitter
- 1 tablespoon fine purple glitter
- 1 teaspoon star-shaped glitter, optional
- 1 small mixing cup, at least 12 fluid ounces
- 1 small spoon or craft stick for stirring
- 1 funnel, 1/2 inch opening or wider, optional but helpful
- 1 tablespoon clear-drying waterproof craft glue for sealing the lid
- 1 pair disposable nitrile or vinyl gloves, optional
- 1 washable table covering or 18 inch by 24 inch drop cloth
- 3 paper towels or 1 washable cloth for spills
- 1 permanent marker for labeling the jar, optional
Instructions
- Cover the table before you begin with a drop cloth to contain any spills.
- Wash and dry the jar completely, removing any labels.
- Pour 1 cup clear school glue into the mixing cup, then add 1 cup warm water. Stir slowly for about 1 minute until the mixture looks evenly cloudy.
- Divide the mixture by pouring half into a second clean cup.
- Add 1 tablespoon blue liquid watercolor to the first cup and stir slowly.
- Add 1 tablespoon purple liquid watercolor to the second cup and stir until the color looks even.
- Stir 1/2 tablespoon silver glitter and 1/2 tablespoon blue glitter into the blue cup.
- Stir 1/2 tablespoon silver glitter and 1/2 tablespoon purple glitter into the purple cup.
- Set the funnel in the jar and pour the blue mixture slowly into the jar, tapping the bottom gently to release air pockets.
- Pour the purple mixture over the back of a spoon into the jar gently.
- Add the remaining glitter in small pinches to the jar to adjust the sparkle.
- Leave about 1 inch of empty space at the top of the jar.
- Screw the lid on firmly and turn the jar upside down to test the motion of the glitter.
- Adjust the mixture by adding more colored mixture or warm water if necessary.
- Seal the lid by applying a thin bead of clear-drying waterproof craft glue around the lid’s inner rim, then screw it on tightly.
- Let the jar cure upright and untouched for 24 hours.
Notes
Handle all materials carefully and keep away from eyes and mouths. Supervise children ages 6 and older closely, especially during sealing.
