Create playful glow-in-the-dark bubbles using ordinary bubble solution and glow pigment for a magical summer night activity.

  • Total Time: 60 minutes

Ingredients

  • 4 cups ready-made bubble solution, unscented or lightly scented
  • 2 tablespoons water-based glow-in-the-dark craft pigment, green, blue or another bright color
  • 1 tablespoon clear corn syrup
  • 1 medium mixing bowl, at least 6-cup capacity
  • 1 silicone or plastic spoon, 8 to 10 inches long
  • 1 small funnel, 1/2 inch opening or wider, optional but helpful
  • 1 clean plastic bottle with a 5-cup capacity and screw lid
  • 2 to 4 bubble wands, 6 to 10 inches long
  • 1 measuring cup with a 1-cup capacity
  • 1 tablespoon measuring spoon
  • 1 washable table covering or plastic drop cloth, at least 24 by 36 inches
  • 1 pair protective gloves, any size that fits comfortably
  • 1 old towel, at least 12 by 18 inches
  • 1 bright flashlight or sunny windowsill, for charging the glow pigment
  • 1 lidded tray or shallow plastic bin, at least 12 by 9 inches

Instructions

  1. Cover your table before you measure anything to prevent slippery spills.
  2. Put on the protective gloves and place the mixing bowl in the center of the covered table.
  3. Measure 4 cups of bubble solution into the bowl, pouring close to the surface to avoid whipping extra foam.
  4. Add 1 tablespoon of clear corn syrup and stir with the silicone spoon using slow circles for about 30 seconds.
  5. Measure 2 tablespoons of water-based glow pigment and sprinkle it across the liquid evenly.
  6. Stir slowly for 2 minutes, scraping the spoon along the bottom and sides of the bowl.
  7. Let the mixture rest uncovered for 5 minutes to allow foam to settle.
  8. Skim away any thick layer of bubbles if necessary.
  9. Pour the mixture into the 5-cup plastic bottle, leaving a little space at the top.
  10. Screw the lid on firmly and roll the bottle gently between your palms for 20 to 30 seconds.
  11. Let the covered bottle rest for at least 30 minutes, or 1 to 2 hours if possible.
  12. Test a small amount before it gets dark by pouring 1/4 cup into the lidded tray.
  13. Charge the glow pigment by setting the closed bottle and clean wands in bright sunlight for 30 to 60 minutes.
  14. Move outside and pour only 1/4 cup at a time into the tray.
  15. Dip the wand slowly, lift it straight up, and pause for one second before blowing gently.
  16. When finished, pour any unused solution back into the bottle if it remains clean.

Notes

This project is best for children ages 5 and older with close adult supervision due to the irritation risks of bubble solution and glow pigment.
