Transform a clean glass jar into a stunning galaxy display with a black exterior and a glowing interior using simple painting techniques. This DIY project is beginner-friendly and perfect for families or space-themed celebrations.

Ingredients

  • 1 clean, dry jar
  • Glow-in-the-dark paint (suitable for jar surface)
  • 1 paintbrush (that fits inside the jar)
  • Black paint (appropriate for jar’s surface)
  • Water (for cleaning paintbrush)
  • Glitter (optional)
  • Small galaxy-themed decorations (optional)

Instructions

  1. Clean the jar thoroughly. Remove labels and any adhesive residue, then wash the jar. Rinse it well and let it dry completely.
  2. Paint the outside black. Apply a coat of black paint to the exterior of the jar. Follow the paint label for application and drying guidance, and let the coat dry completely before moving on.
  3. Apply the glow-in-the-dark paint inside. Once the black paint is dry, use a paintbrush to coat the inside sides of the jar with glow-in-the-dark paint. Follow the product instructions for how much paint to apply and how long it needs to dry.
  4. Add glitter if you like. While the interior paint is at a stage that can accept it, sprinkle in a little glitter for extra sparkle. Avoid adding so much that it hides the luminous coating.
  5. Add small galaxy-themed decorations. Place any optional decorations where they enhance the space-inspired look. Avoid overcrowding the jar.
  6. Let everything dry completely. Leave the jar undisturbed until all paint and any added adhesive are fully dry. Once ready, expose the jar to light as directed by the glow-paint label, then take it into a dark space to see the effect.

Notes

Supervise children while crafting, as glass can break and paints or small decorations may not be appropriate for young children to handle alone.
