No reviews

This project involves crocheting a soothing pumpkin using worsted weight yarn and simple half double crochet stitches, creating a charming seasonal decor piece.

  • Total Time: 180 minutes

Ingredients

  • Worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium), acrylic, about 200 g total in pumpkin color (2 skeins)
  • Worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium), about 30 yards in brown or green for the stem and optional leaf
  • H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle with a large eye for sewing seams and weaving in ends
  • Scissors
  • Stitch marker (optional)
  • Tape measure
  • Polyester fiberfill, about 3 ounces (85 g)
  • One small dry twig or wooden stem, about 1 to 2 inches long (optional)

Instructions

  1. Chain 21 for the foundation chain, then add 1 turning chain for a total of 22 chains.
  2. Work 1 half double crochet (hdc) into the second chain from the hook and into each chain across (21 stitches).
  3. Chain 1 for the turning chain, turn your work, and make 1 hdc in the back loop only (BLO) of each stitch across (21 stitches).
  4. Repeat the last step for 29 more rows until you have 31 rows (with 21 stitches each).
  5. Check the strip before sewing; it should measure about 6 inches wide by 12 inches long.
  6. Fold the strip so the first row meets the last row, then sew the edges together with a whip stitch or mattress stitch.
  7. Gather the bottom by weaving a yarn tail around one open edge, pulling gently until the opening closes.
  8. Turn the piece right side out, and fill it with polyester fiberfill in small handfuls.
  9. Gather the top by weaving around the upper opening and pulling the yarn gradually while pressing the stuffing inward.
  10. Add the stem by pushing a small dry twig or crocheted stem into the center, securing it with several stitches.
  11. Optionally, make a leaf with green yarn by chaining 6 and working various stitches across, then sew the leaf beside the stem.
  12. Finish by weaving in the ends and shaping the pumpkin if needed.
