  • 1 tablespoon liquid dish soap for fizzy dough
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar for fizzy reaction
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour for homemade play dough
  • 1/2 cup table salt for homemade play dough
  • 3/4 cup warm water for homemade play dough
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil for homemade play dough
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar for homemade play dough
  • 2 cups dry oats for a scoop-and-pour bin
  • 1 cup dry black beans for a scoop-and-pour bin

  • 1/2 cup hair conditioner for cloud slime
  • 1 cup dry white beans for a texture bin
  • 1 cup dry lentils for a texture bin

  • 4 plastic or stainless steel mixing bowls, 2-quart size
  • 10 small cups or containers, 8-ounce size
  • 4 measuring cups, 1-cup size
  • 6 measuring spoons
  • 2 silicone spatulas or large spoons
  • 1 large rimmed baking sheet, about 12 by 18 inches
  • 1 washable tablecloth or plastic drop cloth, about 4 by 6 feet
  • 1 pair disposable gloves, optional for colored mixtures
  • 1 roll paper towels
  • 1 set child-safe scoops, funnels, and measuring cups, optional
  • 1 lidded plastic storage bin, about 12-quart size

Instructions

  1. Cover your table with the washable cloth.
  2. Set out the stations with the rimmed baking sheet in the center and arrange the ten small containers around it.
  3. Make the cloud dough by stirring 2 cups flour with 1/4 cup baby oil or vegetable oil in a bowl.
  4. Color the rice by placing 2 cups uncooked rice in a container with 1 teaspoon food coloring and 1 teaspoon rubbing alcohol, then seal and shake.
  5. Mix the oobleck by stirring 2 cups cornstarch with 1 1/2 cups water slowly.
  6. Prepare the fizzy dough by stirring 1 cup baking soda, 1/4 cup water, and 1 tablespoon dish soap together.
  7. Combine 2 cups flour, 1/2 cup salt, 1 teaspoon cream of tartar, 3/4 cup warm water, and 1 tablespoon oil for the play dough. Knead for 3 to 5 minutes.
  8. Build the scoop-and-pour bin by mixing 2 cups oats, 1 cup black beans, and 1 cup pasta in a container.
  9. Whip up cloud slime by stirring 1 cup cornstarch with 1/2 cup hair conditioner.
  10. Make the texture bin by pouring 1 cup white beans, 1 cup lentils, and 1 cup yellow split peas into a container.
  11. Offer a simple color tray with portions of cloud dough, play dough, and cloud slime.
  12. Finally, clean up by placing each dry mixture in its labeled container, and wipe down the table and bowls.

Notes

Keep food coloring, vinegar, rubbing alcohol, and all mixtures away from eyes and mouths. Adult supervision is advised, especially with children under 3 due to potential choking hazards.
