Create a simple and engaging string spinner toy using cardstock and cotton cord. This project is perfect for a calm afternoon and makes a delightful handmade toy that spins.

  • Total Time: 60 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 sheets of 8.5 by 11 inch cardstock
  • 1 round lid or plate measuring about 4 inches across
  • 1 length of cotton cord measuring 24 inches
  • 1 pencil
  • 1 pair of paper scissors
  • 1 single-hole punch or sharp pencil
  • 1 small ruler at least 6 inches long
  • 1 set of colored pencils, crayons, or washable markers
  • 1 small bottle of liquid craft glue, optional
  • 1 paintbrush or scrap of cardboard
  • 1 sheet of scrap paper or reusable craft mat
  • 1 pair of child-safe scissors (if a child is helping)

Instructions

  1. Cover the table with scrap paper or place a reusable craft mat beneath your work.
  2. Place the 4-inch lid on the cardstock and trace around it twice, making two circles.
  3. Cut slowly with the scissors, turning the paper rather than forcing the blade around a tight curve.
  4. Decorate one circle with colored pencils, crayons, or washable markers, using broad sections to show movement.
  5. Let the decorated circle rest for 10 to 15 minutes if the ink feels damp.
  6. Find the center of each circle by making faint marks with the ruler.
  7. Mark two points about 1/2 inch to either side of the center mark on the same straight line.
  8. Punch through both layers at the two marks or use a pencil to make holes.
  9. Thread one end of the cotton cord through the first hole and bring it back through the second hole, tying a double knot.
  10. Slide the knot toward the outside of the loop for balanced string.
  11. Add a thin layer of liquid craft glue between the two circles if needed and press them together.
  12. Press the circles together under a book for 10 minutes, then check the holes.
  13. Hold one section of cord in each hand, pull apart, then bring hands closer together without letting the cord go slack to spin the wheel.
  14. Inspect for any wobbles and adjust as necessary.
  15. Allow the assembled spinner to dry flat for 30 to 60 minutes or overnight if using glue.

Notes

Keep scissors pointed down when carrying. Children should use child-safe scissors and be supervised when using sharp tools. Store the spinner away from direct sunlight and moisture.
