Create soothing sugar scrubs for personal use or as thoughtful gifts, blending sugar, oil, and optional scents for a gentle exfoliating experience.

  • Total Time: 60 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups granulated white sugar, fine or regular grain
  • 1/2 cup light carrier oil, such as sweet almond, grapeseed, sunflower, or fractionated coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon finely ground oats, optional for a softer texture
  • 10 drops skin-safe fragrance or essential oil, optional
  • 4 clean 2-fluid-ounce cosmetic jars with lids
  • 1 medium mixing bowl, 2-quart size
  • 1 silicone spatula or sturdy spoon
  • 1 set of measuring cups
  • 1 tablespoon measuring spoon
  • 1 small funnel, optional for easier filling
  • 1 clean dry towel, 12 inches by 24 inches or similar
  • 1 sheet of parchment paper, about 12 inches by 16 inches
  • 1 pair of disposable nitrile gloves, optional for filling
  • 1 label sheet or four paper labels, optional
  • 1 permanent marker, optional

Instructions

  1. Cover your table with a sheet of parchment or a washable towel to catch drips.
  2. Wash the jars, lids, bowl, spoon, and spatula with warm soapy water. Rinse them well and dry completely.
  3. Set the dry jars on the covered work surface with their lids nearby.
  4. Measure 1 1/2 cups of granulated sugar into the mixing bowl.
  5. Add 1 tablespoon of finely ground oats if using.
  6. Pour in 1/2 cup of carrier oil slowly around the bowl.
  7. Stir slowly with the spatula for about 2 minutes, scraping the bottom and sides.
  8. Check the texture and adjust by adding oil or sugar if needed.
  9. Add up to 10 drops of skin-safe fragrance or essential oil and stir for another minute.
  10. Place the funnel in the first jar and spoon in the scrub, filling each jar to about 1/4 inch below the rim.
  11. Tap the bottom of the jars gently against the towel to settle air pockets.
  12. Leave the open jars on the covered surface for about 30 minutes to allow moisture to evaporate.
  13. Close the lids firmly and check for leaks.
  14. Label the jars with the scent, date made, and a note such as 'Keep water out.'

Notes

You can reuse small glass jars for this project, and keep the scrub away from direct sunlight and moisture to extend its shelf life.
