Ingredients
- 2 clean glass jars, 12 to 16 fluid ounces each, with lids removed or set aside
- 2 battery-powered LED tea lights, warm white, 1.5 to 2 inches wide
- 2 fluid ounces dark blue washable acrylic craft paint
- 1 fluid ounce violet acrylic craft paint
- 1 fluid ounce pink or magenta acrylic craft paint
- 1 fluid ounce white acrylic craft paint
- 1 fluid ounce glow-in-the-dark acrylic craft paint, water based
- 1 tablespoon water for thinning paint
- 2 foam brushes, 1 inch wide
- 2 small round paintbrushes, size 2 or 4
- 1 small paper plate or paint palette, about 6 inches wide
- 1 roll painter's tape, 3/4 inch wide
- 4 disposable gloves, one pair per person who wants them
- 1 plastic tablecloth or drop cloth, at least 4 feet by 6 feet
- 4 lint-free cloths or clean cotton rags, about 12 inches square
- 1 bottle glass cleaner, 8 fluid ounces, for cleaning the jars
- 1 sheet fine sandpaper, 220 grit, optional for smoothing a rough painted edge
Instructions
- Cover the table first with the drop cloth, then place the jars, paints, brushes, water, and cloths within easy reach.
- Wash the two jars with warm water and dish soap, then dry them completely. Wipe the outside with a little glass cleaner on a cloth to remove fingerprints and oil.
- Place painter's tape around the bottom rim of each jar if you want a clean resting edge.
- Pour the dark blue paint onto the palette and mix in about 1 teaspoon of water. Use the 1-inch foam brush to apply one thin coat, turning the jar as you work.
- Let the first coat dry for 30 to 45 minutes.
- Apply the second thin coat of dark blue paint, again turning the jar.
- Allow the color layer to dry for 45 to 60 minutes.
- Dab violet and pink paint onto the blue surface. Let small patches overlap.
- Allow the color layer to dry.
- Add a very thin layer of glow paint with the foam brush.
- Use the small round brush to make small stars with white paint.
- Remove the painter's tape slowly while the last coat is dry but not fully hard.
- Set both jars aside for 4 to 6 hours, then leave them overnight before regular use.
Notes
Use only battery-powered LED tea lights for this project. Do not place a real candle inside a painted glass jar, since heat and paint create an unsafe combination.
