Ingredients
- About 60 yards of worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium), preferably acrylic, with orange being traditional but other colors like cream, rust, mustard, or olive also work
- One H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- A small amount of worsted weight yarn for the stem, about 5 yards in brown, green, or another contrasting shade
- Polyester fiberfill, about 2 ounces (57 g), for stuffing
- Yarn needle with a rounded point for sewing and weaving in the ends
- Scissors
- Two stitch markers, optional
- Tape measure
Instructions
- Chain 19 with your orange yarn and H-8 (5.0 mm) hook for the foundation chain.
- Half double crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across.
- Chain 1 to turn, then work 1 hdc in the back loop only of every stitch across.
- Repeat the previous row until you have 36 rows total.
- Once you have 36 rows, the rectangle should measure about 5 inches tall by 5 inches wide.
- Fold the rectangle so the first row meets the final row, with the wrong side facing out.
- Sew the short edges together with whip stitches, then turn the tube right side out.
- Make running stitches around one open edge to gather it, then secure.
- Stuff the pumpkin with small pieces of polyester fiberfill.
- Make running stitches around the remaining open edge to gather the top and secure it.
- Wrap yarn from top to bottom around the pumpkin to create sections.
- With brown or green yarn, chain 6 and slip stitch in each chain to make a short cord for the stem.
- Sew the stem securely to the gathered top.
- Weave in the ends and shape the pumpkin as desired.
Notes
This project is suitable for confident beginners. The finished pumpkin can be used for autumn decor. Ensure to keep small children in mind when placing it due to small parts.
