Ingredients
- Worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium), acrylic, about 180 total yards, or 2 skeins of about 170 yards per 100 g skein.
- H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle with rounded tip
- Small scissors
- Stitch marker (optional)
- Tape measure
- Polyester fiberfill, about 1.5 ounces (43 g)
- Extra worsted weight yarn for the 24-inch hanging cord
- Scrap brown or green worsted weight yarn for three stems (optional)
Instructions
- For each pumpkin, make a foundation chain of 15 chains.
- Turn your chain. Make 1 hdc in the second chain from the hook and 1 hdc in each chain across. You have 14 stitches.
- Chain 1 to turn, then make 1 hdc in each stitch across. You still have 14 stitches.
- Repeat the previous row until you have 18 rows total.
- Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail about 18 inches long.
- Weave the short starting end into the fabric with your yarn needle. Keep the long tail available.
- Fold the rectangle in half so the short edges meet, with the right side facing inward.
- Use the long tail to sew the two short edges together with small whip stitches.
- Run the yarn needle around one open edge, inserting it under the top loops of each row, to gather the edge.
- Add a small amount of fiberfill, then pull the opening nearly closed and secure the yarn with several stitches.
- Turn the pumpkin right side out, filling it lightly with fiberfill.
- Gather the second open edge with the new yarn tail, adding more fiberfill before closing it fully.
- Make two more pumpkins in the same way.
- For each stem, chain 5, then slip stitch in the second chain from the hook and across.
- Fasten off the stem and sew it to the top of a pumpkin.
- Cut one 24-inch length of yarn for the hanging cord and thread it through the top of each pumpkin, spacing them about 3 inches apart.
- Tie a small knot on each side of every pumpkin, then weave in or trim the remaining ends.
- Weave in every remaining end with the yarn needle.
Notes
This project is suitable for beginners and the finished garland can be displayed in various places around the home.
