Create a set of textured clay trinket dishes, perfect for holding rings, keys, or keepsakes using simple techniques with air dry clay.

  • Total Time: 48 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 pound of white air dry clay, divided into four equal pieces
  • 1 piece of cotton fabric measuring 8 inches by 8 inches
  • 1 small rolling pin, 10 to 12 inches long (or a smooth glass bottle)
  • 1 texture item measuring about 3 to 5 inches wide (leaf, lace, woven fabric, rubber stamp, or fork)
  • 1 small bowl measuring 4 to 5 inches wide
  • 1 craft knife with a 1-inch blade (optional)
  • 1 sanding sponge or sheet of 220 grit sandpaper, about 3 inches by 3 inches
  • 1 cup of clean water in a small bowl
  • 1 soft paintbrush, 1/2 inch wide
  • 4 ounces of water-based acrylic paint (one or two colors, optional)
  • 2 ounces of water-based matte sealer (brush-on type, optional)
  • 1 disposable table covering measuring at least 24 inches by 36 inches
  • 1 pair of nitrile or household gloves (optional)
  • 1 clean sheet of parchment paper measuring 12 inches by 12 inches for each dish

Instructions

  1. Cover your table with the disposable table covering and set the parchment sheets nearby.
  2. Cut or pull the 1 pound of clay into four pieces of about 4 ounces each.
  3. Knead one piece of clay for 1 to 2 minutes until it feels flexible but not sticky.
  4. Place the clay on parchment and roll it to about 1/4 inch thick, turning it several times.
  5. Lay the texture item over the clay and roll over it once with gentle pressure or press it with your fingertips.
  6. Place the 4- to 5-inch bowl upside down on the clay and press lightly around its edge.
  7. Use the craft knife to trim the circle if you want a clean edge.
  8. Slide your fingers under the clay circle and place it inside the bowl, pressing the center down gently.
  9. Dip one fingertip into water and smooth any sharp edge or small split.
  10. Repeat the pattern to make three more dishes with the remaining clay.
  11. Once all dishes are formed, allow them to dry slowly for 24 to 48 hours, turning them upside down after 12 hours.
  12. Lightly sand the rim with 220 grit sandpaper once the clay feels completely firm.
  13. If desired, brush on a thin coat of water-based acrylic paint and allow it to dry.
  14. Optionally, apply a light coat of water-based matte sealer and allow it to dry.

Notes

Keep the surface of the dishes away from direct sunlight for long periods, as strong light can fade acrylic paint. Avoid using the dishes in areas of high moisture.
