Create a colorful volcano artwork that erupts with fizzy lava using baking soda paint and vinegar. This hands-on science craft is ideal for children and encourages creativity while demonstrating a chemical reaction.

  • Total Time: 40 minutes

Ingredients

  • Washable kids’ paint
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Free printable volcano base
  • Small cup or bowl for mixing (optional)
  • Spoon (optional)
  • Paintbrush (optional)
  • Dropper or pipette (optional)

Instructions

  1. Mix a small amount of washable kids’ paint in a container. Stir in baking soda until the ingredients are combined into a paintable mixture.
  2. Place the free printable on a protected work surface and use the baking soda paint to decorate the volcano image.
  3. Encourage children to use different colors or layer the paint in selected areas.
  4. Use a dropper, spoon, or carefully pour small amounts of vinegar onto the painted baking soda, adding only a few drops at a time.
  5. Continue adding vinegar to areas that have not reacted until the fizzing slows down and stops.
  6. Leave the printable flat until it is fully dry and wipe the work surface promptly.

Notes

Adult supervision is recommended throughout the activity. Vinegar should not be tasted, and children should avoid rubbing the mixture into their eyes.
